The Hidden Treasure

Posted by on

Downsizing a home is more than just reducing the number of possessions. It’s a journey that often leads to unexpected discoveries, emotional moments, and sometimes, bizarre situations. I am often asked by people "What is the most unusual thing you have ever found?" It seems like there is an endless curiosity about what is found in other peoples homes. After 12 years in the business, I have decided to start sharing some of those experieces in my blog. We will touch on past experiences as well as current. I always say what we do would make a great Netflix mini series.

The Hidden Treasure:

Years ago I went on a consult in the Fremont area of Seattle. A widower that was looking to downsize his arts and crafts style home had some average to interesting items to sell. As we were walking the house, he received a phone call. While he was on the all I continued to "poke around the house." With many old homes, there are doors that people often just keep open. Well, I was poking around behind one of these doors and noticed a framed document hanging on the wall. I took a closer look and noted the document was signed by George Washington & Alexander Hamilton. When Washington became president in 1789, he asked Alexander Hamilton to join his cabinet as the first Secretary of the Treasury. I was shocked to see this historic piece hanging on the wall behind the swinging door. After my client ended his call I simply asked "Is this an authentic document?" His answer was yes. He quickly stated that it was "Not for Sale" and that was the end of the discussion. As I left the house I couldn't help think "How does someone aquire a document such as this?" Shouldn't it be in a museum or an archive? The client has since moved and I am no sure what has happened to this interesting piece of history.

At The End Of The Day:

Downsizing is a complex process filled with unique challenges and surprises. These unusual experiences remind us that each client's journey is unique, and that the process often leads to unexpected treasures, reconnections, and heartwarming moments. As we continue to help clients downsize, we look forward to the many more stories that await us, each adding a new chapter to the fascinating adventure of simplifying one’s life.
